One of the major announcements made by Apple was that they would add electric vehicles charge routing into their next update to Apple Maps for iOS 14.

This allows drivers to navigate to a destination and automatically be told where to charge and for how long, simplifying the process of taking a road trip with an electric car.

The EV routing aims to eliminate range anxiety, the fear of running out of charge by showing charging stations compatible to a user’s electric vehicle along their route. Maps on iOS 14 will track the user’s current charge and factor in things like elevation and whether to automatically add charging stops along their route, Apple senior director Stacey Lysik said during WWDC 2020.

Apple is currently working with BMW and Ford to integrate EV routing into maps for their electric car models and plans to add compatibility with many more manufacturers as time goes on.

Apple Maps is also adding a feature that lets users view congestion and green zones and pick alternate routes that avoid these areas, if needed.

Further, there will also be a dedicated Cycling option that will help find bike paths and takes elevation into account. It’ll tell you if the route includes quiet or busy roads, let you know if there’s a steep section or if you’ll need to carry your bike up some stairs.

Cycling directions will be available in watchOS 7, too.
