In a conversation at Express Adda in Mumbai, filmmaker Karan Johar opened up about the need for cinema to highlight the significance of climate change. To a question asked by one of the participants Saher Bhamla of The Bhamla Foundation about cinema’s role in creating awareness about issues of environment and climate, the filmmaker was candid about the work he needs to do to highlight the same.

“I can give a clever answer or an honest answer. But I will give you the honest answer,” said Johar.

Saher Bhamla had asked Johar that being a youth icon what was his message for his fans regarding environment and climate change.

“I haven’t yet done anything that addresses climate change and there is nothing on the radar yet. But I do believe that it is something that plagues us and we have to be very mindful about it.” Johar agreed the issue demands immediate attention. He regretted not having addressed it yet through his movies but thanked Saher for putting the message across to him. “The seed of thought around climate change has been planted.”

It’s not that the filmmaker hasn’t ever spoken about the environment ever. Last year, Johar had shared a video on social media, where he talked about doing his part to save planet Earth. He emphasised fighting climate change and talked about incorporating the 4Rs of waste management – reduce, reuse, repair and recycle. KJo had shared the message as part of the Indian government’s Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav initiative ahead of the Independence Day celebrations.
